We’ve started work in Salford on a £200,000 project to help improve water quality in the River Irwell by separating rainwater from the combined sewer system on Blackburn Street. By diverting surface water away from the sewer network and into the existing surface water system, we’ll reduce pressure during heavy rainfall, helping to lower the need for storm overflows to operate and improve the resilience of the local network. More than one hectare of land will be “replumbed” as part of these upgrades, supporting better rainwater management and long-term environmental benefits for the area. This work is being delivered in collaboration with Muse Group as part of wider plans across the Adelphi Village zone of the Crescent Salford development, ensuring new and existing infrastructure is designed with sustainable drainage in mind. This scheme also forms part of our wider £280 million Rainwater Management Programme, helping to reduce flood risk, protect rivers and build a more resilient network across the North West.

Work has started at Langdale Wastewater Treatment Works on a scheme to improve water quality in Elterwater and the wider Windermere catchment. We are installing Mobile Organic Biofilm (MOB) technology at the site following a successful 12 month trial, which demonstrated significant improvements in treatment performance, including consistently low ammonia levels that already meet future environmental standards. MOB uses naturally occurring bacteria to break down wastewater more effectively, enabling the site to treat higher volumes and reduce the frequency of storm overflow operations. By working alongside existing infrastructure, it also helps minimise construction activity and disruption for local communities. A further upgrade is planned later this year to reduce phosphorus to the lowest technically achievable levels before water is returned to the environment. This forms part of a £200 million investment across the Windermere catchment over the next four years, as part of a wider programme investing more than £13 billion to improve rivers, lakes and bathing waters across the North West.

Liverpool's water infrastructure has shaped the city for generations. Today, we are setting out our vision for what comes next. Speaking at Flood and Coast in Liverpool, our CEO, Louise Beardmore, announced a £30 million investment by 2030 to help transform the way water is managed. At the heart of this vision is creating a spongier city, capturing and holding rainwater where it falls. By using these approaches, we can slow the flow during heavy rainfall, reduce flood risk, ease pressure on the network and help cut the use of storm overflows. To showcase some of the innovative projects already helping to reshape the city’s relationship with water, we have launched Let It Drain: A Scouse SuDS Stroll, a walking route through the city centre highlighting drainage features and how they support a more resilient system. Alongside this, the investment will support a range of projects designed to reduce spills, improve river water quality, explore water recycling opportunities, enhance habitats and provide the infrastructure needed to support future growth. This investment marks an important step in shaping a more resilient future for the city region.

Over the past few months, our employee-led networks have been busy doing what they do best – bringing people together in ways that genuinely matter. Across the business, we’ve seen a steady drumbeat of activity shaped by our communities themselves. We’re supporting colleagues caring for elderly relatives through our later careers community. We’ve hosted open sessions like my wife and my menopause journey, helping to break down stigma through real stories. And we’ve created space for people to come together through events like Taste of Culture – sharing food, stories and experiences to celebrate the diversity across our teams. There’s also a strong focus on practical support. From pension awareness events to wellbeing sessions, our networks are helping people navigate different life stages – not just at work, but beyond it too. What makes this different is how connected it all is. Our communities don’t operate in silos – they collaborate. Whether it’s awareness activity, Values Weeks or shared campaigns, it’s a collective effort to build a culture where people feel they belong. And it’s not slowing down. New sessions, new conversations and new ideas are constantly being led by our people. At the heart of it all is something simple: these networks create spaces where people feel part of something. Not as an add-on, but as a core part of how we work.
